2012 has definitely been a new year for Barrio Writers! Both chapters have teamed up with a local
university and partnered with an online publication that offers internships to Barrio Writers.

In
Orange County, California, veteran Barrio
Writer and 2012 High School graduate, Marilynn Montano is the first intern
hosted by BW community partner, Voice of OC. The Voice of OC is a
non-profit investigative news agency dedicated to in-depth coverage of Orange
County government and politics.
Montano
started with Barrio Writers summer of
2010 through the 1-week program held at the Newhope Library, since her
participation she has also interned with the OC Register and Latino Health Access Building Healthy Communities Media Team. Montano is a
long-standing Santa Ana Library teen space member, proud spoken word artist and
also co-founded Coyolauxqui Circle
for young wombyn. This year she obtained the Barrio Writers in OC Program Coordinator title and will also be
co-teaching workshops at CSUF and UT at Austin with founder Sarah Rafael García.

In Austin, Texas, Latinometro has provided the same
support for Barrio Writers. Latinometro is a Latino community
website that covers local Latino culture, issues, blogs, articles, events,
restaurants and businesses. Currently, 2012 Barrio Writer and High School
Senior, Isaac Villela-Guzmán is the first to participate in the BW internship program
with Latinometro.
Villela-Guzmán is interested in obtaining a career in the medical field. He plans
to attend a community college for his basics in nursing then transfer to a
university. This is Villela-Guzmán’s first summer with Barrio Writers; he expressed great interest in the internship
because he uses writing as an outlet to express himself. He is also an advocate
for Gay rights and active member of the Texas Gay Straight Alliance Network.

One goal of the new community partnerships is to create pipelines to higher education and build career skills for youth from the underserved surrounding areas where the programs are based. The BW internships focus on providing professional skills and a path for youth to develop into community leaders through creative writing, higher education and the cultural arts.
